Why Windham Ridge Summer Blend and Katahdin Granite
At roughly 1,100 square feet, the new patio redefines how you can enjoy the backyard. For a space this size, material selection matters as much as layout. We chose the combination of Windham Ridge Summer Blend with a Katahdin granite border for three key reasons: it complements the size of the space, fits the homeowner’s budget, and aligns with the desired color palette. Larger stone pieces work best on expansive patios—they anchor the design visually and prevent the space from feeling fragmented, while the granite border adds a crisp, finished edge.
Working With (and Around) the Existing Grade
Many Pownal properties feature a natural slope, and this yard was no different. While a few boulders had already been positioned to address the grade, the solution wasn’t complete. We sourced additional local boulders to build up areas that needed height and create striking definition around the patio’s perimeter.
The boulder work served a dual purpose. It not only resolved grading challenges, but also created inviting planting pockets that now embrace the patio, softening the stonework and lending the entire space a polished, welcoming atmosphere.
An Old Piece of Granite Gets New Purpose
A favorite detail from this project is a piece of granite found on the property. Originally used as a makeshift step, the homeowner chose to keep it instead of removing it. As the design evolved, repurposing the granite as a step through the new planting beds proved to be a clever solution: it preserved a bit of the property’s history and minimized unnecessary regrading. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful design can emerge organically during construction.
New Access to the Home
The project also added a new 8-foot-wide granite step, providing proper access to the home’s main sliding doors—an entrance that previously relied on little more than a temporary wooden step. Now, it’s a substantial, permanent threshold that reflects the quality of the patio beyond.

Granite steps set on gravel can shift or settle over time—a costly problem to fix. Repairs often involve bringing heavy equipment back across a finished patio, risking damage to the landscape. By contrast, a poured and pinned concrete pad keeps the steps secure from the start. For more than 30 years, this has been Stone Solutions Maine’s non-negotiable standard.
Timeline and Site Logistics
The project was completed in about 6–7 days. One factor that kept the timeline on track was the ability to store excavation fill on other areas of the large property, eliminating the need for off-site hauling. This approach not only sped up the process but also saved the homeowner money.
The property’s gravel driveway provided reliable access throughout the project, with the only notable obstacle being a septic tank that required careful navigation. Scheduling the patio installation before the driveway was paved allowed for convenient material deliveries and protected the new surface, which needs about six months to cure before withstanding heavy use.
